Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to enable swap memory on your VPS:1. Check if swap already exists
swapon --show
free -h
  • If no swap is listed, proceed below.
2. Create a swap file? Example: 2 GB swap (adjust
2G
to your needs)
sudo fallocate -l 2G /swapfile
If
fallocate
is not supported, use:
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=2048
3. Secure the swap file
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
4. Mark it as swap
sudo mkswap /swapfile
5. Enable swap
sudo swapon /swapfile
Check again:
swapon --show
free -h
6. Make swap permanentAdd the following line to
/etc/fstab
:
sudo nano /etc/fstab
Scroll to the bottom of the file and add this line on a new line:
/swapfile swap swap defaults 0 0
7. (Optional) Adjust swap tendencyThis controls how aggressively Linux uses swap. Lower = use swap less.
sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=10
Make it permanent:
echo "vm.swappiness=10" | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.conf
